My name is Liyah. I am the creator of Keep Birth Beautiful. I am a community-based birth worker; birthing doula, Certified Lactation Counselor, training CALM Birth educator, Evidence Based Birth pro member, Ujima Maternity Network member, volunteer, and doula mentor, philanthropist, investor, cloth diapering mother of three boys, and all around Certified Birth Nerd. The U.S. ranks highest of all developed countries in terms of maternal mortality and morbidity with numbers on the rise even though our hospital-based maternity care receives the highest funding of any other country. In Arkansas we are sweeping the bottom of the bottom in terms of our maternal health rates. My mission is to fill the gap between providers and clients by providing evidence based education, options, and resources to families and individuals with the goal to encourage them to empower themselves by playing a more active role in their health and life care and management. According to doulafoundation.org, "Research shows that women who have doula support are 50% less likely to deliver prematurely, 36% less likely to deliver low birthweight babies, and 33% more likely to initiate breastfeeding. Studies show that when a doula is present partners participate with more confidence, mothers have less pre- and postnatal stress, and are less likely to have postpartum mood disorders." Most importantly, I seek to show up as the comfort and support families need me to be in the moments I am needed.
